This weekend I was looking forward to a lot of sporting events. The NBA had a lot of good games on, rounding out the first round. Also, the Kentucky Derby was on yesterday, the elite sporting event for horse racing.
So I made very few plans this weekend and made plans to stay at home. I had a few things I wanted to get done while watching the games and such, but really my plans were to watch the games! Now that I live along, I knew I would have the TV to myself and not have to worry about anything.
So I thought.
This weekend has been an utter disappointment in the sporting world. Not because of friends interuppting or the event itself (so I've heard or read) but rather because of the broadcasting by both NBC and ABC.
Background information. We get a lot of weird weather in Tuscaloosa. In the year and a half I've been here, I bet we have had dozens of tornado warnings and watches, but hardly anything substantial. I'll give 'em this, we have had some storm damage, but being from the midwest, I've seen a storm or two. I'm not used to a town shutting down for the possibility of snow...or rain...or wind...or sun...It seems like ANY weather we get, this place freaks out.
So lately we have had a lot of storms. This weekend a new set of storms has rolled through that has caused most every channel to cancel their previously scheduled program to air weather coverage. Here's why I have a problem with it.
First, there is a weather channel for a reason. Second, if every channel covers it, whats the point? Third, when no storm ever even touches down, it just seems like a little much.
Yesterday I'm watching the Derby. If you have ever watched the Ky Derby before, you know the feeling of watching forever for the two minutes of glory followed by the excitement of the interviews surrounding the winner. I watched and watched and watched. And they're off...and so was the derby. The weather came on and that was the end of it. I figured it would come back in a matter of minutes...but 45 minutes passed and I had watched the same stupid report over and over. "We can't confirm any tornados but we on the lookout" they said OVER and OVER. I saw the same radar at least a dozen times. But the worst part was I missed the Derby. I was ticked.
Then today, I get home pretty amped to watch the Hawks in Game 7. The crowd is going nuts, the game is going well and Hawkys look good. Halfway through the second quarter, the weather breaks in....its not halfway through the 4th and I'm not expecting to see anymore of the game. I'm so ticked. Again, I've seen the same dang radar. They have said the same report over and over and it looks clear outside. I bet I'm not the only fan who wants to see the game. If it was a baseball game...one of a hundred and something in a season, I'd give it up and deal with it. But this is game 7. This is the end of a season for one team, and I'm sitting here alone in frustration watching the weather. If I go up a channel, I'm watching the weather, down a channel, yep you guessed it, the weather.
In my book, when it comes to weather vs sports, sports will always win. But unfortunately, no one asked me. When you ask NBC and ABC, the weather always wins. Super super lame.
UPDATE: This is just funny to me. I'm listening to the game on the radio and have the 'weather' on in the background, ya know, just in case. Well, the game comes on in the bottom right corner in a small screen. Well, in the same right corner, is the small Alabama map with the color coding for the warnings and watches. Its covering half the screen. If they would switch one thing to the left side, both would be in full view, but no...ABC just doesn't have it together. I guess the only plus is its about time they thought to put part of the screen on the game. But the horrible part is in order to watch it, I have to also see the weather man. Urgggg
