Because I pay with cash, I'm often changing it up. I pay with a 20 from time to time, but more times than not, I have coins in my pocket and ones in my wallet that will make less change. The sad reality is twofold. Cashiers don't deal with cash well and people pay with cash so rarely that they are truly slowed down when it comes their way.
Today, I was at target getting a few things. My total was 6.52. Seems simple, I'll just give the guy 11.52 and take my 5 back. So I'm getting my back while he is slowly working on my change. I look up and I kid you not, he hands me 5 ones. Was not the point of me handing you a ten and a one, to get back a five, to avoid having a bunch of ones in my wallet. Urgggg.
A few days ago, I was at dinner and again I paid with cash. I handed the cashier a similar amount. She looked back at me and said "you gave me too much money" and handed the ones back. Yes, yes I know. In my pride I'm tempted to say just type in the amount I gave you and let the smart little machine tell you what to do, afterall, we let machines do everything else. This is one of the only things 'we' still do, and we don't even do it well. Chalk it up to our bad math skills, whatever it may be. The short time I did spend teaching in the classroom, I certain these are the types of things that were taught. I'd expect people to know how to make change.
Maybe I'll change and start using my debit card.

Oh my gosh! This just happened to me last week. It drives me crazy because they treat you like you are dumb for "giving them too much money" but all i really want is an even number! We are on a cash budget too.
