I work with Campus Crusade for Christ at The University of Alabama (I bet you knew that...but every now and then someone might read this that doesn't, so there you have it) Thats just a fancy way to say that I work with college students full time. Also translated, many people think I'm a college student. I guess I look young enough to be one, certainly act like one, and dress the part.
But there are certain things I just refuse to do. And I mean refuse. I praise God that I wear tshirts, shorts and flip flops to work. Sure, I dress nicer when I feel up to it, but it makes me stick out a bit if I dress too nice. Especially because of the dress here at Bama. Let me tell you a thing or two.
About a year ago, I told you about the shorts...http://christieonpaper.blogspot.com/2008/09/branch-out-bit.html#comments and was willing to share my 'real' feelings. Well, its that time of year ago. School has been in session for over a month now, and the fashion statements have been bold. So I'm ready to tell you what I think.
My target seems yet again to be girls, more than likely sorority girls. I promise you, I have nothing against them. I work mostly with them. I hang out with them. Its just they seem to be the easy target for me as of late. Its also because the greek system sets the tone on campus. If they are doing, everyone is doing it. That 20% of campus makes it cool and then the rest of the campus just tries to be cool by doing it, not knowing how lame it actually is. I know, I know, I sound like a jerk, but its just that I have an opinion.
So heres what it is. The girls these days, are wearing entirely oversized tshirts. By oversized, I mean looks-like-shes-dating-the-o-lineman-and-borrowed--his-shirt-after-shacking-at-his-place. At least three sizes too big. If the hypothetical she wears a small 'normally' she is ordering XLs. She walks around on campus with this oversized shirt hanging well below those nike shorts, thank goodness I guess. It looks like PJs, and slightly awkward. Its everywhere. Everyone's doing it too.
We sell shirts at Crusade right. We intentionally ordered a lot of smalls, remembering as a student at UGA that so many girls wanted smalls. Well, we resorted to giving the shirts away for free, and still can't get girls to TAKE THEM FOR FREE because they are size small. A FREE shirt. "Do you have any larges? XLs?" My sarcasm is screaming inside but I refrain and nicely say no, we are all out.
I will count my blessings that girls aren't wearing extremely tight clothes, at least not to class. But really, tshirts where it looks like thats all your wearing, thats the best you got?
I'll say it again. I love the Greek students. I love their influence on campus. I just hope this trend doesn't last long. I suspect they will look back in a few years, maybe days, and think 'what was I thinking' I do all the time about things I wear.

This made me laugh because it's EXACTLY what we did 12 years ago (YIKES on that) when I was in a sorority here:) It's hilarious to me how fashion comes full circle. We always ordered XL tshirts! Then after college when the style was to wear smaller tshirts we made fun of ourselves. Ha! I can't believe it's this way again and I can't wait to tell my friends and try to notice this new trend!
haha. this is so true and i too have been known to order a size or to larger. my theory.....you have room to grow and if it does shrink you're in good shape. ha. love and miss you!
